How to convert a QuickTime recording to a GIF
Find your recording. QuickTime Player saves screen and movie recordings as .mov files — by default on your Desktop, named "Screen Recording ….mov". Recordings made with Shift-Cmd-5 land there too.
Upload it. Drop the file above (up to 95 MB). Uploading starts right away while you pick your moment.
Trim it. Drag the two blue handles to the part worth looping — a button click, a bug, a feature demo — or hit now to grab the player’s current position.
Create and download. We convert the section with a two-pass colour palette, optimize the file, and hand you a GIF ready for docs, bug reports, pull requests and chat — free.
Frequently asked questions
Where does QuickTime save my screen recording?
By default on the Desktop, as "Screen Recording date.mov". If you used Shift-Cmd-5, the save location is whatever you chose in the Options menu — Desktop unless you changed it.
Do I need QuickTime installed to convert?
No — everything runs here in the browser and on our server. Any .mov file works, whoever made it, and you can convert from Windows or Linux too.
Are GIFs good for screen recordings?
Short ones, yes — a looping GIF plays instantly in docs, GitHub issues, pull requests and chat with no player needed. Keep it under 10 seconds and pick Large so UI text stays readable.
Is this QuickTime to GIF converter free?
Yes — completely free, with no account and no daily limit for normal use. Each GIF carries a small Gickr badge in the corner. Gickr has been making GIFs since 2007.
What happens to my recording?
It is used to build your GIF and nothing else. Uploads are removed from our server automatically within a couple of hours; the finished GIF stays available at its own link.
